chashama presents: “Guest House” by Yejin Yoo

Jan 30 – Feb 20 at chashama’s 266 W 37th St gallery (between 7th and 8th Ave) Reception: Sunday, Jan 30th

About The Work: Sound/ Video/ works on paper.

Works on paper Word Cards Using watercolor as medium, each work is a small card sizing 2.5”x1.25”. These cards are non-representative auto drawings, ambiguous in-between forms moving away from what is graspable. They are meant to stand individually as well as collectives and when assembled into a grid, find different meaning in co-relation to other cards assembled.

Video Scanned works on paper (Word Cards) and photos taken from random occasions in artist’s daily life are collaged with minimum video edit. The motivation is to create a trigger to look at without particular context other than fluctuating thoughts and undulating experience of eyes pulling different directions.

Sound Sound recorded at the location of the show is made into rhythm via cut and paste editing and will be played back to the street where the original sound was recorded.

Artists Bio Born and raised in Seoul, Korea. Yejin moved to United States in year 2000. She attended and graduated from School of Visual Arts, NY for both under graduate (2005) and graduate studies (2007) in Fine Arts. Currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

“Whether it’s painting, drawing or video, I see my process as channeling through play. It’s a continuous attempt at building a virtual helmet where quality and characteristic of the content work in a way where transformation of moment is possible. I am drawn to aesthetics that are ambiguous in nature; both beautiful and ugly; graphic and organic; dark and light etc. Blurring the line between judgment and feeling propels me and I try to get there by avoiding excessive polishing or concrete system. “
