Carol Salmanson’s “Park Lights” is illuminating Park Avenue South at 20th Street. Sponsored by 254 Park Avenue South, this project includes Neo-Gothic Rockets (2011), a site-specific installation in the second-floor corner windows as well as Upon Reflection (2009), a wall sculpture glowing in the vacant storefront facing Park Avenue South. Salmanson uses light to reflect and enhance existing architecture and surroundings and also explores the interplay of light, form and materials.

Neo-Gothic Rockets (2011) was commissioned by 254 Park Avenue South for the second-floor corner windows. This site-specific installation plays with the building’s architecture and bustling neighborhood, emphasizing different materials and colors at various times of day.

Installed in the ground floor commercial space of 254 Park Avenue South is Upon Reflection (2009), a totemic work consisting of LEDs, stainless steel, electronic-ballast fluorescent lights, gel filters and prism rods. This ethereal sculpture explores an ancient sculptural symbol, but by using repetitive structures removes the vertical hierarchy associated with totems. Imbuing the work with a mystical aura, the colored lights create a contemplative, meditative space.
