Monuments is an installation comprised of sculpture, paintings, and video investigating the vexed identity of victims and victimizers in our contemporary culture. Heist illuminates these flawed, inequitable power relationships with small gouaches depicting landscapes containing vestiges of past lives and sites of violence where individuals have experienced victim status, including post-Katrina New Orleans, the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, TX, and the infamous Guantanamo Bay detainment facility. Text-based paintings depicting the rearranged speeches and conversations of influential conservatives––such as Ann Coulter and JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon––exaggerate the particular characteristics informing their behavior. Here, Heist pairs simplistic rendering with bright coloration as a way to undermine the authority of these individual’s words. Crying Men is a video depicting powerful media pundits, such as Glenn Beck and Dan Rather, exhibiting false vulnerability while promoting aggressive rhetoric. Central to the show are four sculptures recreating detached foundations and stoops from the Lower Ninth Ward, the only structures remaining in Katrina’s aftermath. Inscribed with phrases like “ I am here. I have a gun,” as seen in post-Katrina media coverage of homes and buildings, these sculptures become like tombstones symbolizing an empty and apocalyptic landscape. Monuments is Heist’ s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery.
