These two solo exhibitions, drawing and Splat, face each other from across the room and bask in each other’s well honed similarities and differences. Both seduce the eye with their surfaces, Batty with the texture of the handmade paper ridden by a bazillion scratchy pencil marks, and Smith’s delicate yet toothy brushwork that fills in yet defies the territory. While it makes sense to attempt to grasp them by taking in the upclose details as well the overall shape or form, yet done and clear, you remain pretty uncertain or spinning a yarn. Both artists give a lot of info but reveal little. For the moment, the final say is your call.
