HESKIN CONTEMPORARY PRESENTS
Susan Still Scott Corporeality and Other Things of Grace and Beauty March 3 – April 9, 2011 OPENING RECEPTION, THURSDAY, March 3, 6 – 9 PM.
Heskin Contemporary is pleased to present susan Still scott’s exhibition, “Corporeality and Other Things of Grace and Beauty.” This exhibition will be a new series of mixed media paintings, opening March 3rd and running through April 9th 2011. A reception will be held for the artist from 6 -9 pm on Thursday, March 3rd. The following is an excerpt from the brochure adjoining the exhibition written by the artist and writer Jennifer Riley.
Susan Still Scott mixes sophisticated visual play, with a range of carefully considered responses to issues of modernist painterly abstraction. For this show, “Corporeality and Other Things of Grace and Beauty”, Scott’s constructed paintings frame the idea of corporeality in her own particular context. The theme of this work, says Scott, “comes out of feelings of having a body … this universal experience is the commonality between us. Understanding the way things meet, join and work such as shoulder to arm has a kind of logic that we all share.” The overriding narrative – albeit subtle and abstract – is emphasized by the work’s often comic state of dishevel and informality and it suggests that we are all compromised in some manner but the show must go on, so we’d better pull ourselves together and put our best foot forward.
Like most painters, Scott uses many of the traditional materials; paint, cloth, wood, staples, hooks, wire and so on, to imagine new ways of structuring an image, however, here, they are combined to foreground unique relationships between the elements themselves and subsequently their potential relation to broader arenas such as those of architecture, sculpture and installation.
Born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Susan Still Scott received a BFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. During her studies, she spent a year in Rome, Italy, and received an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art & Design, Boston, MA. She has been awarded residency fellowships at both Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, NY, and the McDowell Colony in Peterborough, NH. Scott has taught as a member of the painting faculty at the Montserrat College of Art, Beverly, MA. In addition to numerous group shows, her work appeared in a solo exhibition “Make Do and Mend” at the Kingston Gallery in Boston in the spring of 2010. In the fall of 2010 she had her first solo exhibition at the Danforth Art Museum in Framingham, MA. This is her first solo exhibition at Heskin Contemporary.
