Jeffrey Leder Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibit by the artist Charles Marburg. Marburg’s unique artwork is closely tied to his approach. Having spent over twenty years studying image, shape, color, and medium, his work has become an extension of himself and his study. He often works on more than one painting at a time; moving from piece to piece as each challenges and examines a different aspect of an idea.

“Charlie’s abstract paintings are an exploration of a full range of biomorphic formulations,” says gallery Director Jeffrey Leder. “You feel as you explore his artwork that you are getting to know him very well. His pieces are from deep within and are quite personal. They emerge from him as heartbreakingly beautiful paintings, to be enjoyed for their narrative content as one would enjoy reading an engrossing book.”

An exploration of shape and spatial relationships, the approach Marburg chooses often dictates the culmination of each piece. Marburg will employ similar techniques in creating each piece he works on; exploring what combination of devices is most successful within each unique piece. “An image, color combination, formal device may appear in one painting only to be moved to another,” he says, “a mistake made here can be successful there.” His paintings are personal stories that express an unconscious dialogue. His goal in this is to “be more sensitive to my creative process, and hopefully better able to question my own underlying assumptions about subject matter.” No piece is finished until it possesses “a hint of the sublime” that connects the viewer, the artist and the subject matter. Marburg has previously exhibited at The Kunsthallan, Denmark, Nicholas Davies & Co, NY, the Sylvia White Gallery, NY, Valerie Miller Fine Art, CA, The Swiss Institute, NY, The Drawing Center, NY, 80 Washington Square East Galleries, NY, Marymount Manhattan College, NY and the Baltimore Museum of Art, MD.

Jeffrey Leder will be presenting a selected group exhibit of Portraits from March 27 – April 30. Jeffrey Leder Gallery is located minutes from Manhattan, in the heart of the world-class creative community of Long Island City. Leder has converted a former factory space into a 3,000 square-foot clean, elegant space. The gallery presents a wide range of important contemporary art by established and emerging American and international artists.
