Adventures From the Past is a set of four pop-up works by Conrad Vogel, with images culled from the era of the swashbuckling hero—of the perennial clash of nations, each seeking imperial and commercial dominance over the others. Motivated by the cogitations of an essentially Romantic sensibility, yet also informed by the moral tenor of current events, they provide a double bind of influence for an artist whose interests take him far from the art world insider’s game of mirroring the cognoscenti. Vogel is a natural storyteller, whose fascination with the fabric of history and the rigor in its accounting create a paradoxical state of esthetic fantasy that is palpable yet intimate.
