Raandesk Gallery is pleased to announce Collide, a solo show by photographer Jennie Barrese on view from April 28th through June 4th, 2011. Collide will feature Barrese’s new series that focuses on an integration of intimately photographed body parts and dramatic photo retouching.
In 2009, Barrese returned to black and white to capture the harshness and contrast of her “experiments” of photographing items such as gum, beans, cotton, hair, thread and needles with such abstraction that we were sometimes baffled as to their identity. Barrese has departed from her “lab” based methods of photography with her new series of works by moving much of the experimentation to the digital manipulation of the work rather than her subject.
With Collide, Barrese continues to explore in black and white but this time to experiment with the human body. By photographing body parts of friends and then digitally manipulating the images to create a collision of parts Barrese explores how a moment in time; a second, a minute, where two paths cross can forever change the course of our lives. Whether they are dramatic events or a mundane meeting of someone who later becomes a pivotal part of our journey, we are shaped by these “collisions” throughout our lives. Barrese began this exploration with concept sketches of abstract color forms and then photographed flesh to mimic her vision.
About the Artist: Barrese was born and raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania. She received a BFA in Fine Arts Photography from Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts. After living in Savannah, Georgia for a few years has settled in New York City with her husband Josh. When she’s not making art, she is retouching images for top New York City photographers and running her freelance design business, Little Taco Designs. Jennie Barrese has shown her work in New York City, Jersey City, NJ, Washington D.C, Savannah, GA, Syracuse, NY, Stroudsburg, PA and Scranton, PA. This is Barrese’s second solo show with Raandesk.
