Heskin Contemporary is pleased to present Doreen McCarthy’s exhibition, “Deliberate Deviations.” This exhibition will include 2 site specific room installations, 2 inflatable sculptures, and works on paper, opening April 14th and running through May 21st 2011. A reception will be held for the artist from 6 -9 pm on Thursday, April 14th.

McCarthy’s sculpture emphasizes the centrality of form which inhabits and transforms the space they occupy. Her work explores scale, building and modeling of objects, translucency and the absence and presence of object hood. The fragile and mundane materials of McCarthy’s sculptures are both subversive and sublime.

Simulacra Light is comprised of illuminated and manipulated lenticular plastic that has pronounced qualities of reflectivity and translucence creating lines and hues of separate illusions. The shimmering plastic captures, refracts and magnifies space through a complex combination of volume, scale, color and light as line drawing.

Exchange Course, a series of triangular Plexiglas forms continue McCarthy’s penchant for transforming ordinary materials into sculptures which appear both monumental and transparent. The artistic position confronts the architecture of the specific space, content, and context both theoretical and practical. The concept is part of a larger system intervening in 3-dimensional space through a quiet yet subversive fusing of the interior and invisible world tapping into imagination.

McCarthy’s sculptures Air Sigh and Mediating Effects continue her ongoing exploration with inflatables. The material crosses kitsch with technical execution and visual elegance expanding an awareness of the time based nature of space that resonates far beyond its origins. The buoyancy of the inflatables are central to her practice and is carried into the installation of Simulacra Light and Exchange Course. The image is bold yet mysterious expanding the possibilities of three-dimensional form.

McCarthy lives and works in New York City. Her work has been exhibited in numerous group and solo projects in the United States and internationally in Europe and Japan. A solo project with Galerie Junger, Shanghai is forthcoming in 2012.
