Art Connects New York and Spattered Columns is pleased to announce the opening of Brandon Friend & Emet Sosna: New Works to kick off its 2011/12 fall exhibition season. As a nonprofit exhibition space dedicated to presenting work by outstanding New York City-based visual artists without commercial representation, Spattered Columns will introduce the work of these emerging artists to its audiences in a large-scale, two-person exhibition.
Brandon Friend’s (MFA Queens College, BA University of Maryland College Park) unique approach to layer-based mark-making, or “imprinting”, incorporates painting, print-making, collage, and image transfer in his “Defender” series. Social Media Specialist Randy Schwartz says Friend’s series “explores our modern aggressions in the name of peace, prosperity, and national security, as they’re channeled through institutions of mass media”. These assertive images of militia men are hauntingly obscured through veils of images and gestures.
Emet Sosna (MFA Brooklyn College, BFA California College of the Arts) similarly utilizes multiple mediums in his work, particularly oils, inks, acrylics, fabrics, papers, and leafing on canvas. Sosna’s process calls into question various figurative and non-figurative painting traditions while he explores different notions of expression, identity and art history in his works.
The opening reception for Brandon Friend & Emet Sosna: New Works will take place from 6pm-8pm on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at Spattered Columns, 491 Broadway, 5th Floor, New York, New York 10012. The show will run until September 28, 2011.
Spattered Columns is a program of Art Connects New York, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that seeks to enrich the lives of New Yorkers by making original visual artwork more readily available in non-traditional settings.
