This exhibition features eight lithographs from a portfolio of prints drawn from the Hebrew Home’s permanent collection entitled, Great Cities of the World, 1974, a series of abstract works inspired by Amsterdam, London, Moscow, New York, Peking, Sydney, Venice and Tokyo. They reveal the diverse colors, forms and moods typical of Kimura’s style as well as his idiosyncratic notion of the essential nature of each of the cities represented.
Kimura was born in 1924 in Yokosuka City, Japan, and moved to New York City in 1964. He attended university in Tokyo. His work has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions at such venues as the Brooklyn Museum, MoMA, the Guggenheim Museum, and the National Museum of Modern Art (Kyoto, Japan).
As a member of the American Association of Museums, The Hebrew Home at Riverdale is committed to publicly exhibiting its art collection throughout its 19-acre campus, including the Derfner Judaica Museum and a sculpture garden overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades. The Derfner Judaica Museum + The Art Collection provide educational and cultural programming for residents of the Hebrew Home, their families and the general public from throughout New York City, its surrounding suburbs and visitors from elsewhere. The Home is a nonprofit, non-sectarian geriatric center serving more than 3,000 elderly persons through its resources and community service programs.
The exhibition is free and open to the public and may be viewed in the Gilbert Pavilon Gallery located on the campus of the Hebrew Home. Open daily, 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
