When it comes to fitting into variously defined catagories and narratives, Guyana, the only Anglophone country on the continent of South America, is often caught between its close cultural, political, and historical ties to the Caribbean Islands, and its physical location on the mostly Latin mainland.
The result is that this vital, multicultural, and multiracial former outpost of the British Empire is often overlooked in reviews of Latin American art, and is only grudgingly admitted into an occasional West Indian themed exhibition. However, relative to its size, the country has produced more than its share of extraordinarily accomplished artists.
A few are presented in this exhibition: Damali Abrams Carl Anderson, Frank Bowling, Dudley Charles, Victor Davson, Stanley Greaves, Carl E. Hazlewood Greg Henry, Donald Locke , Andrew Lyght, Philip Moore, Bernadette Persaud, Arlington Weithers.
Sponsored by Guyana Cultural Association of New York.
