SHAKEOUT RETURNS TO MARINA 59 IN ROCKAWAY WITH ART, MUSIC, FOOD, BOATELS, AND MORE

Fourth Incarnation of Free Arts Festival Brings Together Local Artists and Performers

This year marks the fourth incarnation of Shakeout, an annual group show organized by local artists and curators in Far Rockaway, New York that is free and open to the public. Marina 59 owner Ari Zablozki, who was recently featured in a Wall Street Journal article on the burgeoning art scene in the Rockaways, is pleased to host the free event for the second year in a row. Shakeout IV: Life Preservers—co-curated by Olivia Wyatt, Jessica Shaefer, and Shaun Kessler—will take place on Saturday, August 13, from noon until midnight, and will feature site-specific art installations, live music and performances, food, boat rides, and much, much more.

As part of the show, a group of young New York-based artists were asked to create site-specific works within the marina, with a focus on socially- and environmentally-engaged work that allows audiences to further interact with the surrounding environment. Some of the works include old, junked boats that are being painted and transformed into various art installations, some are incorporated into the marina docks themselves, and others are placed directly in the waters of Jamaica Bay and will be accessible by boat. The marina will have kayaks and motorboats available for hourly rental, and has also placed a swimming dock in the middle of the bay so that, as swimmers or boaters approach the dock, they will be able to experience floating sculptures along the way. Shakeout IV will also feature artwork presented in Marina 59’s ArtBloc, a mobile exhibition and performance space that is currently in residency at the marina.

Participating visual artists include: John Bianchi, Gabriel Buentello, Sean Carney, Molly Dilworth, Bryan Harrington, Ed Harris, Corinne Jones, Abshalom Jac Lahav, Andres Laracuente, Gretta Louw, Mara Mayer and Heather Quesada, Olov Sundstrom, Radek Szczesny, Revel Woodard, Marina Zamalin and Maia Cruz Palileo, and the Rockaway Artist Alliance, among others.

A series of live performances and music shows will take place throughout the day and into the evening. Highlights include Sandflower Dyson, This Frontier Needs Heroes, The Wild Yaks, Spectacle Theater, Little Band of Sailors, Hunter Simpson, Dome Theater, A’yen Tran and The Boat for Singing Together, Rob Bronco, Alice Shyy and her “Note-aoke” and a synchronized swimming performance especially created for Shakeout by Nicole Sciarrillo. Local favorites Veggie Island, Sharon is Karen, and DiCosmo’s Italian Ices will offer food and refreshments for sale, and Zablozki’s bar in Williamsburg will provide a bar with drinks available for purchase.

Shakeout will also feature artist Constance Hockaday’s “Boggsville Boatels,” recently featured in The New York Times, which will act as platforms for performances throughout the day and sleeping quarters for guests after 8pm. All boatels are currently sold out for the event but Shakeout attendees are welcome to camp at the marina. In addition, designer Mary Meyer will sell her handmade clothing at a pop-up shop especially created for Shakeout IV.
