Tanis: Welthaupstadt

Chashama 266 Gallery
266 West 37th Street, 212-391-8151 x 26
Midtown
September 20 - October 7, 2011

“Tanis: Welthaupstadt” is a diorama/peepshow that will take place in the chashama storefront. Will Corwin will white out the window, leaving a few small viewing holes for passersby. During the first week, the artist will install a miniature plaster city, referencing both Hitler’s and architect Albert Speer’s plan for “Germania Welthaupstadt” (Hitler’s design for the new Berlin, which would be the capital of the world) and the model of the city of Tanis from Raiders of the Lost Ark. The installation is meant to draw attention to the folly of creating master plans, especially for cities. During the process of its installation, Corwin’s master plan/model city will begin to collapse, leaving nothing more than miniature ruins, which will be on display for the second week of the installation.

About the artist: Will Corwin is a New York based sculptor. He has exhibited installations previously with chashama, The Theater for the New City, Gallery Aferro and The LaMama Gallery. His most recent project was Auroch’s Library at The Clocktower Gallery this past summer, and The Clocktower Chess Match, a live performance sculpture. He has also shown at The Frise Kunstlerhaus in Hamburg and the George and Jorgen Gallery in London.
