Pablo’s Birthday is pleased to present the New York debut of Berlin artist Karsten Konrad. Konrad’s process involves collecting wood, metal, and other formed material from the streets of the city, various second hand stores, and flee markets. While studying the eclectic shapes and colors, he comes into “conversation” with these objects, initiating a process of deconstruction and reconstitution of these base and discarded materials into elegantly gestural sculptures. With geometries crossing through one another in exploding architectural articulations balanced by the generous curves of spheres and constellations of swirling piping, these daring sculptures convey a kinetic tension. Upon several visits to New York City, the gallery has been transformed into a pop up studio/workshop, functioning as a headquarters for the creation of this new New York series. While he normally works out of his studio in Berlin, and within the confines of his local vernacular, this series GUTTER PEARLS from Karsten Konrad is defined by the city of New York itself, reflecting both its energy and diversity. For Konrad, the detritus of NY is anything but base, rather he describes the streets of New york as an artists “paradise” with a “superfluidity of materials” where any material can play a part, and “dissolve into the wholeness of the form”.
