Nancy Margolis Gallery is pleased to announce Jacob Ouillette’s first solo show at the Nancy Margolis Gallery. The opening reception will be October 20, 6 to 8pm.
Ouillette paints patterns of brilliant to muted hues creating canvases of dazzling color and form. The colors, freely applied are not pre-planned, but chosen intuitively. Formatting the paintings into grids of modulating colors the artist uses brushes 2” to 12” in width. In spite of the tight grid formation the paintings have a spontaneity, effectively parlaying them into vibrating motion, color and form. Ouillette looks to modern art, abstraction, minimalism, and impressionism to inform his work. As an amateur harmonica player music also has an important impact. Attracted by the improvisational nature of jazz and blues, he found music and color had a like way of vibrating, and creating energy. While studying painting at art school Ouillette developed a great interest in printmaking. Abandoning it after graduating due to the cost to setup a print studio, he recently discovered he could again work with the medium by making a simplified variation of mono-type prints. Ouillette will include a special set of these prints in the exhibition.
Ouillette received his BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI. He has participated in fellowships at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Mt. San Angelo, VA and the Edward F. Albee Foundation/William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center, Montauk, NY. He has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions in New York and many other states on the East Coast.
