As Robert Fox will tell you, Fairbanks, Alaska, is as much a state of mind, as it is an actual location. Locked in arctic cold and darkness for months at a time residents are forced to live indoors for long durations. Fox’s paintings of oil on wood capture that experience in graphic terms that convey a psychological intensity: perspectives are medieval, objects that are not quite where they belong, and the perforated black skies makes one feel adrift in space.
Fox is a self-taught artist. He lives and works in Fairbanks, where he is emerging as a regular participant of that city’s art scene. He was introduced to New York as a 2004 Triangle Artists Workshop participant. This will be his first solo exhibit.
