Ethan Cohen Fine Arts is pleased to announce The Fabric of Life, an installation of video and prints by Ali Hossaini. In a 2010 review, the New York Times described Hossaini as a “biochemist turned philosopher turned television producer turned visual poet.” His richly colored, sensual imagery contains surprisingly cerebral currents that draw on science, philosophy and spirituality.

The Fabric of Life questions the structure of experience by probing its fundamental elements. Undulating forms representing thought, perception and feeling dissolve into hallucinatory passages of pure color, taking on abstract, musical qualities. Shot in Iceland, Greenland, Italy, France, Madagascar, Burma and other locales, the installation explores themes ranging from the death of the artist’s mother ¬to the evolution of the cosmos.

Live action is combined with 3D and generative animation. Included are excerpts from three video cycles, Epiphany, Ouroboros and Oceanic Verses with presentations of Unperception Now, Memory Begins and 4Monkeys. A special version of Executive Privilege, a 3D tribute to Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, will be shown.

Ali Hossaini’s work has been exhibited in venues such as the Lincoln Center, the Museum of the Moving Image, Anthology Film Archives and the Montreal Festival of Film on Art. The opera Oceanic Verses, a collaboration with composer Paola Prestini, opens at the Kennedy Center in June, 2012.
