Just in time for the holidays, Frederieke Taylor gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Franco Mondini-Ruiz’s exhibition of 400 paintings, priced at $400 each, entitled Quattrocento. Best known for his sculptural vignettes that were composed of a vast array of found objects, and dealing with cultural and social bias, the Tejano artist will present a similar narrative, now in the form of small acrylic paintings.

These highly affordable and accessible paintings, dubbed “stocking stuffers” by the artist, are charming, seductive yet poignant and are adorned with titles such as: Holy Guacamole, Joffrey Jesus, Drag Queen in Green, The Judy Garland show, Woman in View of Rome, Cheeses of Nazareth, The Memoirs of Ruth Buzzie, The Visitation of Witches, and Bellinis at Fellinis.

The titles add to the humorous confrontation between ritual and hilarity so unique to all of Mondini-Ruiz’s work.

Throughout the duration of the exhibition the artist will be in the gallery, carrying on a dialogue with the public as well as executing commissioned work on the themes from his show. This continues the tradition of the “botanica” established by the artist in San Antonio in the mid-nineties, and the Infinito Botanica, the stand in front of the Whitney Museum where he sold small objects and knick-knacks as part of his participation in the 2000 Whitney Biennial.

At the time of the exhibition, Franco Mondini-Ruiz’s book High Pink, published by D.A.P. will be in the book stores and will also be available at the gallery. In High Pink, Mondini-Ruiz mixes personal narratives with images of over fifty of the sculptures that were featured in his first solo show with the gallery in 2002 entitled “Nacho de Paz”.

Franco Mondini-Ruiz was the recipient of the 2004 Rome Prize and called one of the “25 Shakers and Movers” in Artnews November 2004. He has participated in recent shows including the 2000 Whitney Biennial, Ultrabaroque in 2002, Pan in the Park at the Laumeier Sculpture Park, St Louis, Missouri in 2003, Botanica Los Angeles at UCLA Fowler Museum, Giant at Marfa Ballroom, Marfa, Texas in 2004 and the 2005 Prague Biennial.
