Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of artist Laleh Khorramian featuring her latest video, Water Panics in the Sea (approx.14 min, 2011). The video is the fourth chapter in an ongoing cycle of animations connected to the five elements of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Ether. The exhibition opens on Thursday, December 8th, 2011 and runs through Saturday, February 4th, 2012.

Water Panics in the Sea is an epic sea voyage of a ghost ship time machine as it traverses the ocean waters through an accelerated, indistinct chronology. The animation is constructed through a process of iterative magnification and manipulation of tiny details extracted from monotype prints, discarded materials, and drawings, which seeks to play with our habituated perceptions through an intricate juxtaposition of scale, distance, time, and space. Water Panics in the Sea reflects themes of odyssey and conquest, underscoring the seemingly infinitesimal, the absurd, and the epic.

An original soundtrack was produced in collaboration between Khorramian and Shahzad Ismaily. Accompanying the video in the back room are a selection of collages that relate directly to the film during various stages of production.

Laleh Khorramian (b.1974) is a graduate of Columbia University’s School of Visual Arts in New York (2004) and received her B.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, IL. She has exhibited her work both internationally and nationally at; Mass MoCA, MA, MOMA PS1, NY, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, CT, Ballroom Marfa, TX, Mills College Art Museum, CA.
