Space for Art and Industry is pleased to announce our second exhibition: Collected Work of Matthew Lewandowski. The exhibition will open Saturday, January 28 and run through Saturday, February 25. Space for Art and Industry is located at Building 92 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The public entrance is on Flushing Ave. at Carlton Ave.
Matthew Lewandowski (b. 1932 Warsaw, d. 2011 New York) was a tool and die maker based in Brooklyn who specialized in the production of steel dies used for the stamping of hollow-form earrings. For thirty years Lewandowski produced jewelry designs for the mass market, hand- engraving thousands of unique die sets. This exhibition draws together a collection of Matthew’s dies, drawings and ephemera, presenting an astounding variety of imagery and iconography. On four large tables, hundreds of cylindrical steel dies bear images ranging from Nike swooshes and Modernist abstractions to finely detailed animals and figures. Taken together, Lewandowski’s dies create a catalog of images drawn from our cultural imagination, beautifully rendered forms that stand in stark contrast to the innumerable digital icons surrounding us daily.
