Barbara and David Stone’s Bookshelf is a life-size-scale watercolor of a bookshelf in Dylan’s parents’ living room. It measures approximately 12’ high and 18’ long. It covers an entire wall. Dylan made a grid with string and then took photographs of the bookcase using the grid as his guide. Every book spine is readable and each photograph slightly overlaps the next one.

Dylan grew up with this book collection. The number of books increased and decreased depending on which house his family lived in. Being avid readers, the collection continually expanded.

This project is a continuation of Stone’s interest in large-scale and life-size cataloguing. In 2003, Stone recreated many of Atget’s Parisian interiors inside of shoeboxes, inspired by a piece first done by Sherrie Levine at Paula Cooper Gallery in 1997, where Levine appropriated Atget’s photographs and exhibited them in walnut frames.

In 2000, Stone presented a project called Drugstore Photographs or a Trip Along the Yangtze River, where he photographed every building on every block on the tip on Manhattan with a point and shoot camera. The entire project is now part of the collection of the New York Public Library. In 1998, he presented an installation titled Won’t You Come and See My Master Drawings where he built a full-scale French sitting room, complete with decorative moldings and detailed mantle-pieces.

Stone was included in Greater New York at P.S.1 in 2000 and in 1998 received an award from the Rema Hort Mann Foundation. He lives and works in London.
