Ms. Atwood’s artistic process involves pushing and transforming fabric beyond its boundaries, infusing life into the material by making it grow into an organic animation. She uses sheer coverings, ruffles, and needlework to create sculptures that represent our need to camouflage the beast inside all of us. The work in Stitch makes reference to parts of our bodies that have courageously broken through the façade of our superficial shell. Zippers and piping are employed to reference this façade, but the artist joins them with translucent material to continuously reveal hints of the internal. Something that would be considered unappealing or grotesque, perhaps a part of the body past its prime, becomes beautiful and sensual, as it is transformed into an entity of exposed truth, unmisted by falsity. Through her playful incongruous details, Ms. Atwood’s work evokes Dali-esque surrealism in all its complexity and glory.

Cynthia Atwood has an M.F.A. in Visual Arts and Sculpture from Vermont College of Norwich University, and a B.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Kansas. She recently co- curated and participated in a show at the Boston Center for the Arts titled “Exposing Scarlet: A Visual Response to The Scarlet Letter.” She has participated in the international artist’s residency program at Art OMI and recently spent a month in Brittany, France on the Klots residency program. Ms. Atwood lives and works in New Marlborough, Massachusetts.
