For this exhibition, Somogyi presents a series of mixed media drawings and sculpture evoking a hallucinogenic feel reminiscent of times passed. Somogyi’s works on paper, romantically filled with couples in abandoned spaces and drifters wandering through dense forests, are infused with energetic, vibrant colors.

Somogyi redefines landscape painting with layered abstract imagery and intricate patterning. Using watercolor as the primary medium, the works border on the threshold of a science fiction tale juxtaposed with contemporary subjects. Infused with rich bursts of sunlight and fluorescent colors each dreamy landscape possesses a lingering sense of uncertainty often oscillating from potential disaster to serene complacency. This teetering state of melancholy, escape, contentment and serenity is what makes Somogyi’s work appear safe and uneasy all at once.

Erika Somogyi received a BFA from The School of Visual Arts, NY. Somogyi recently had a solo exhibition at Rocket Projects in Miami, FL. Her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, including: Sixtyseven, Monya Rowe, Gavin Brown’s Passerby and will also be on view in an upcoming group exhibition at Rotunda, Brooklyn. She currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.
