Lucky DeBellevue considers his work, among other things, as high art filtered through a working class lens. Though not overtly political, there is a commentary involved in the do-it-yourself approach and his use of nontraditional art materials that one might find in craft or hardware stores, items which generally lend themselves to linear and repetitive ways of building. These materials are often suggestive of their function, but not bound by it, and in doing so, create amusement and wonder. Often the sculptural objects are built out of chenille stems (a.k.a. pipe cleaners) using a free form personal system of weaving, which has its own logic. The result is something that exists somewhere between painting, drawing, and sculpture.
