Please join Leonard Tourné Gallery on Thursday, March 1 from 6:30pm to 9pm for the opening reception of “Paradojas: New Work by Francisco Javier Sanz.” The exhibition, a combination of surrealist photography and installation by Sanz, will be on display at Leonard Tourné Gallery from February 25 to March 5.

Sanz seeks in his work to create a relationship between two objects, between inanimate objects and once-living creatures, be it a physical relationship, a sensory relationship or an aesthetic one. Uniting objects and concepts that are at once separate yet somehow connected, he bridges absurdity and logic.

Emil M. Cioran once said, “Lyricism reaches its ultimate form of expression only through delirium.”

Delirium for Sanz is to create tensions; to affix a bat to a butterfly, the skeleton of a human fetus to a grandfather clock, an iron to a stingray. The tensions generated by these unions create the illusion of separate beings coming to life as one.

Originally from La Coruña, Spain, Sanz was trained in law but was drawn to art, a tradition that ran in his family. He is the author of a number of poetry and photography books, including The Wind Has No Script (2004), The Islands Sail (2008) and, most recently, Playing Chess on a Zebra Skin (2009).

Leonard Tourné Gallery will be joined by Low Pitch Orchestra during the opening reception on March 1. Please RSVP to [email protected] or by calling (212)219-2656.
