In collaboration with L’Association des Galeries d’Art Contemporain, GUIDED BY INVOICES is pleased to present an exhibition of photography and sculpture by: Stephen Althouse, Patrick Bérubé, Olga Chagaoutdinova, Thomas Kneubuhler, Valerie Kolakis, Guillaume Lachapelle, Yves Médam, Dominique Paul, and Yann Pocreau.

Based in and around Montreal, these artists employ the history of their media to create works that convey a sense of existential responsibility. Through subtle gestures that often evoke the sublime, theirs is composed, intense, and carefully twisted thread of activist art.

A figure basking in the glow of illuminated billboards in Atlantic City, a power station illuminated in the wilderness, a landscape manufactured of fragments from many places, an antiquated tool shrouded for burial, light seen through an ephemeral installation made of Vaseline, reminiscent of the stained glass windows that once linked material reality to spiritual vernacular, are some of the subjects of the works on view.

The artists’ interest in the narrative potential of objects, architecture, and infrastructure prompts the ways in which they articulate the permutations and paradoxes of the present.

This exhibition is curated by Janine Armin, an independent curator and freelance writer. Her reviews have been published in Artforum.com, The New York Times, Bookforum, Time Out and The Village Voice to name a few. She is a 2012 MA candidate at Bard Center for Curatorial Studies.
