Y Gallery is pleased to present Inside Out a new body of work by Elliott Lloyd. Immersed in Abstract Expressionism since the 60’s, Lloyd conveys a series of seemingly unrelated visual events as part of his process of creation, focusing on the distance between conception and culmination. Through his layering of transparent surfaces, Lloyd’s latest body of work alludes to the very first contact between sight and canvas, the envisioning moment towards the development of a painting.

As Elliott Lloyd says: “Pretend you are inside a room looking out a window. As you peer through the window, suddenly something hits the glass, leaving its’ mark(s); then a second something appears. Then you notice marks on a plane, beyond the window (such as snow on the boughs of a tree), suggesting the outside space. It is important that the first two events do not cover the surface, so as you cannot see outside. All three or more events are painted so as to seem random, just the reverse order of a painting on canvas. These paintings are related to real experiences we have in life, seldom associated with art as a conscious process.” Lloyd finds all drawing to be abstract, no matter if drawn from figurative work, indeed an abstraction of the mind through the hand.

Each work in the show is named after a different area in the northernmost region of Canada close to the Artic.

Elliott Lloyd was born in Sioux City, Iowa. At age 22, he moved to New York City after attending The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).
