Louis B. James is pleased to present its inaugural LBJ PROJECT with Martin Roth’s Untitled (Persian Rugs). Existing between subject and object, Roth’s rugs challenge the viewer’s take on the natural world. The work exists as a living object that requires dedication and care. They are situations created to exist in a slow, evolving time that inevitably takes on a life of their own. Roth’s Persian rugs, brought alive through the cultivation of grass, serve as a living version of the gardens their images often represent. Roth sees himself as “an interventionist who tries to alter the reality of his surroundings.”

Martin Roth (b. 1977, Graz, Austria) lives and works in New York. He has shown internationally since 2001. He received his MFA from Hunter College in 2011.
