In March 2005, Joanna Malinowska traveled to Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, to pay homage to the unconventional pianist Glen Gould. Within the bleakness of the arctic tundra, Malinowska placed a solar powered boom-box on the frozen soil, containing a copy of Glenn Gould’s 1981 recording of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Once activated, the boom box would endlessly play the recording, as long as it survived the severe local weather conditions. The installation was left behind and may still be playing.
