A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to announce vault, an exhibition of new work by 2011-2012 Fellowship artist Aimée Burg. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 24, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
In her first solo show in New York, Burg exhibits an installation of sculptures and painting. Metallic finishes are used with deliberate subtlety, not intended to hide or mask the materials they adorn. The subtle use of metallic and shiny media avoids ostentatious signifiers such as ‘bling’, while offering a nod to genuine artifacts and the nostalgia for finding them.
We now live in the era that speculative fiction authors imagined as “the future”. We have unprecedented access to information, but there is profound uncertainty about how true or beneficial this information actually is. vault investigates the disorienting possibilities of removing meaning from knowledge-packed imagery, i.e. science diagrams and test patterns. The objects and images are stripped of purpose; this simplicity provides a sense of safety. The viewer is at ease despite being surrounded by the unknown.
Aimee Burg is a 2011-2012 A.I. R. Fellowship Artist.
