Dieppa employs a mélange of techniques: staining, splattering, dripping and layering of gestural brush work; yet, this time, she has challenged herself by limiting her typically extravagant palette. The resultant monochromatic, oil paintings of blue, orange, or white appear more organic and liberated, cleverly incorporating raw canvas in areas that afford her bold forms room to breath, and provide the viewer with a variety of delightful entry-points into each composition. Juxtaposed against these large-scale canvases—reminiscent of early Abstract Expressionism—are over thirty 6-inch, square paintings on paper that embody the same dynamism and spontaneity as her larger paintings.

The exhibition is comprised of one large scale painting (144 in x 144 in), three large painting (70×70 in) and a series of small paper paintings (6 x 6 in.)

In viewing her paintings, scale and density, will replaces the emotion, as an idea in action painting. Thinking about what does an action in painting really mean, what is its significance, if any? In this dialogue she hopes to blur the area between viewing and doing. As the viewers become more in tune with these actions which are determined by the paint, its fluidity, it’s moment, and its repetition.

Maria Elvira Dieppa b. 1961, lives and works in both Barranquilla, Colombia and New York City. She received her B.F.A. from Parsons School of Design, and has since exhibited her work group exhibitions throughout Europe, South America, and Brooklyn, NY.
