DODGEgallery is pleased to present our summer group exhibition, Size Matters: Rebecca Chamberlain, Ted Gahl, Cassie Raihl, Matt Rich and Michael Zelehoski.

Size Matters is an exhibition with artists who regularly incorporate scale shifts into their practice without changing their material or process. Not many artists adeptly and successfully transition between dramatically different sizes. Whether the material looses impact or the subject changes meaning, the adjustment from small to large or vice versa often fails. The artists selected for this exhibition each habitually oscillate between varying scales, some more dramatically than others, but all with ease. The artists invited to participate have contributed two works each: one large and one small piece relative to the parameters of their own practice.

Rebecca Chamberlain is presenting her largest and smallest works to date: a five foot high diptych and twelve inch high double-sided plinth. Painting with lithography ink on vintage architecture paper, Chamberlain invokes a wistful timelessness through luminous depictions of interior modernist architecture.

Ted Gahl is presenting his largest painting ever, a seven foot high acrylic on canvas, and a small work on paper. Gahl has a rigorous, unfettered method of painting. His storyboard-like compositions are filled with his familiar, automatic and idiosyncratic imagery that jostles on the edge of abstraction.

Cassie Raihl is presenting two sculptures, one torso-sized and one hand-sized, both incorporating stuffed sacks that drape, stand, or balance interdependently with other objects. Raihl assembles seemingly precarious and richly textured forms with both fabricated and found objects, oftentimes obscuring the difference.

Matt Rich is presenting two wall-hung paper works each representing far-reaching dimensions within his practice. Addressing the materiality of painting, Rich’s textured and free-floating geometric forms are constructed with individuated, and irregularly colored sections that he connects through a process of intentionality and chance.

Michael Zelehoski is presenting a major work and a tiny work, both wall based pieces. Zelehoski deconstructs weathered utilitarian objects and assembles their parts into dramatic, abstract, two-dimensional compositions that are both object and image at once.

_Rebecca Chamberlain was born in 1970 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Chamberlain is known for her accomplishments in fine art, fashion and performance. She has exhibited at VOLTA NY, 303 Gallery and Knoedler Project Space, New York, judi rotenberg gallery, Boston, Champion Fine Art, LA and Agenzio04, Bologna, Italy. She was the recipient of Artlog’s best booth at VOLTA NY 2010 and Joan Mitchell Grant. Chamberlain’s work has been reviewed in Artforum, The New York Times, Art in America, Artinfo.com, The Boston Globe, Flash Art and Tema Celeste among other publications. Her work is included in the collection of Fidelity Investments and Torys LLP. Raised in Pennsylvania, Chamberlain currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Ted Gahl was born in 1983 in New Haven, CT. He received his BFA from Pratt Institute in 2006 and his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2010. Recent group exhibitions include: Not The Way You Remembered curated by Jamillah James at Queens Museum of Art, Queens, NY; Once Emerging, Now Emerging: The Visitation, Cirrus Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Out of Practice curated by Nudashank and presented by Art Blog Art Blog, New York, NY; and Shakedown at DODGEgallery, New York, NY. Solo projects include Night Painter at DODGEgallery, Ted Gahl curated by 62nd Dimension at Green Gallery West, Milwaukee, WI and Ted Gahl at Halsey McKay Gallery, East Hampton, NY. His work has been reviewed in various publications including White Hot Magazine, Beautiful/Decay, and Time Out New York. Gahl lives and works in Brooklyn, New York and Litchfield, Connecticut.

Cassie Raihl was born in 1983 in New York, NY. Raihl received her BFA from the School for the Museum of Fine Arts in 2005 and her MFA from Bard College in 2010. She has exhibited at Thomas Erben Gallery, New York, NY; Sculpture Center, Long Island City, NY; Mika Rollins Fine Art, New York, NY; Deitch Gallery, Long Island City, NY; 119 Gallery, Lowell, MA. Raihl was in the 2012 Brucennial. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Matt Rich received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a BA from Brown University and has attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He has had solo exhibitions at Project Row Houses in Houston, devening projects + editions in Chicago, the Suburban in Oak Park, IL, Samsøn Projects in Boston, MA, VOLTA NY art fair and Halsey McKay in East Hampton, NY. In the past three years, Matt has had group shows at the RISD Painting Gallery, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, Cottage Home and LACE in Los Angeles, Baer Ridgway Exhibitions in San Francisco, Galerie oqbo in Berlin, DODGEgallery and BravinLee Programs in New York. Rich’s works are held in numerous private and public collections including the List Visual Arts Center at MIT and The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. His work has been reviewed by Modern Painters, Artforum, Art Papers and the Boston Globe.

Michael Zelehoski received his BA at the Universidad Finis Terrae in Santiago, Chile in 2003. He completed his Associates of Art degree from Bard College at Simon’s Rock in 1998. Zelehoski received a 2010 Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship and the Survey America Award at Art Chicago. His work received 2nd place in the Golden Frame Award by ArtSlant. In 2009, he received a Development Grant from Assets for Artists. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally including, Christina Ray Gallery, New York; Ferrin Gallery, Pittsfield, MA; North American Cultural Institute, Santiago, Chile; La Nacion, Santiago, Chile; and Local Project, Long Island City, NY. His work has been received in various publications including Time Out, ARTLOG, Cool Hunting, Hyperallergic, Artscope and New York Magazine. Zelehoski lives and works in Beacon, NY._
