Rosemary C. Brooks: Vivid

Expressionism and fauvism combine with a 21st century color palette in Rosemary C. Brook’s solo show at Gallery Brooklyn in a vivid depiction of floral abstractions.

Whether I use a brush, or directly from the tube, my abstractions and my imagined scenes are not of “the real”. The textural effect is what is inspiring, from forms such as china patterns, textiles and folk art. The imagined scenes, as well as the abstractions I create, do not emit moods, atmosphere, they do not attempt to evoke deep space, but instead the colour will sit on the surface, writhing in joyful sensation as a decorative effect. The images do not lie still, but are active and alive, vivid.

Brooks discovered her art world in Queens, NY, gripping strong tempra paints in front of an easel of cascading paper. Her early experience followed and supported her craft today where she has exhibited in Brooklyn and Upstate. Brooks studied painting at the New School and the Art Students League in New York. She received significant influence and mentoring from painter Bruce Dorfman and the League, and was unexpectedly inspired by the “street art” of Phillip Sherrod.

A committed resident to Brooklyn New York, Brooks has had her studio here for many years. However, when the bustle and grime begins to stagnate, Brooks escapes to the comfortable embrace of Mt Tremper, New York, to rehabilitate the mind, and absorb the nature she directly or expressionistically allows to flow through her hands.
