FB Gallery is pleased to present Tiago Gualberto in his first New York City exhibition, Copo Americano. Tiago Gualberto was born in a small town in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, where he attended the Federal University of Minas Gerais’ Fine Arts School. In 2006, he joined the Living Culture Program, a political organization that encourages racial cooperation, solidarity, and transformation. Today, he is a practicing artist and is studying textile and fashion design at the University of São Paulo.

Tiago Gualberto’s work speaks about the Afro-Brazilian culture and the inner discourse that such an upbringing provides. This juxtaposition of culture and ethnicity is highlighted through his unique use of a chalk-like white pastel, a fragile medium that Gualberto uses as a tool of expressive strength. In many of his works we see a surrealist and dadaist touch, with mythological creatures or depictions of everyday objects detourned from their original use or isolated from their environment. He has already participated in many exhibitions in Brazil and his work is currently visible at the Tamarind Institute (University of New Mexico, USA) as part of the Afro: Black Identity in America and Brasil exhibition.
