LINES AND SHAPES brings together works that explore the simplest formal elements of line and shape, whether they are derived in the real world or an imaginary abstraction. Parallel lines, convoluted grids, deconstructed maps, shards, cones and zigs present in this show can be seen not just as tools of formal abstraction but rooted further in the languages of early structures and civilizations. Several of the works share a simple geometry that in many ways pays homage to its minimalist predecessors of the 20th century but also share a hand-made quality that ties it to a much deeper human history of making things by hand. Lines and shapes were the basic building blocks of our pictorial language and can be seen on early human objects such as Cypriot pottery from the Neolithic Age or in the obelisks and ziggurats of the first architects. The human need to invent patterns, symbols and forms through play of line and shape is celebrated in this show with an amazing group of artists including
