Superchief Gallery Presents: Metro Zu “As High As Yo Chest, As Wide As The Ocean”
New Works by Lofty and Freebase Curated by Pierre Francillon + Edward Zipco
“As Wide as the Ocean, as High as Yo Chest,” is Superchief Gallery’s debut exhibiton, featuring the paintings of Lofty 306 and Freebase. The two Miami based artists are essential members of the critically acclaimed art and music collective Metro Zu. While Metro Zu’s droney, “space alien” inspired, stoner rap music has been gaining notoriety since the groups performance/installation at the prestigious Miami Art Basel exhibition in 2010 and 2011. Less has been said about the pair’s rapidly burgeoning fine art accomplishments. Mentored by Pierre Bernard Francillion, a friend and colleague of street art hero, Jean-Michele Basquiat. Metro Zu has also created a large body of visual pieces, often serving as an accompaniment to their music. This exhibition is a solo showing of the collaborative efforts between Lofty 360 and Freebase: brightly colored, abstract paintings and installations in a pop-art style reminiscent of 1980’s street art, and of course the duo’s home base Miami, FL. The best way to describe the summation of “As High as Yo Chest, As Wide as the Ocean”, as Freebase once said is, “We get high and draw funny shit”.
