Through its subject matter and color, Jeff Gauntt’s work suggests a storybook style, albeit a mysterious one precluding straightforward narrative interpretation. Everyday objects (a shoe, a tree) have a happy dream-like quality that is suffused with somberness, sometimes coexisting with a more melancholy mood.

For David Humphrey, in seeming opposition to what has been called the “thrift store social realism” of his visual vocabulary, he relishes in the processes of painting itself, creating lush, abstract backgrounds in postcard-like landscapes. Referencing everything from amateur painting (often by Dwight Eisenhower) to pin-ups, Humphrey uses vernacular imagery and modernist painting as tools for pictoral experimentation.
