Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (RBPMW) is pleased to announce the opening of One Year Later: Part II, the last of two exhibitions featuring our 2011 Studio Immersion Project (SIP) Fellows. On view is the work of Elaine Su-Hui Chew, Veronica Frenning and Erik Hougen.

Before SIP, Frenning worked primarily in ceramics, Chew in printmaking and Hougen with watercolor. Unsurprisingly, the works on view range from pieces simply inspired by printmaking to complex print installations. The SIP experience is evident in the resulting work. It is bound together by an internalization of printmaking processes; even when not producing prints these artists are now thinking… like printmakers.

Hougen creates large watercolor paintings using the traditional color printing method of CMYK color separation. Working from a photograph, each color layer is painstaking painted on top of the next. Frenning is exhibiting ink prints on paper from found, aged paper alongside sculptures, drawings, and collages. These delicate pieces represent printmaking at it’s most elemental; the transfer of marks from one surface to another. Conversely, Chew’s Herbarium for Dark Sleep is a complex print installation layering cut outs of 18 color reduction linoleum prints over hand worked proofs from the same block.
