Y Gallery is pleased to present “Because of Construction”, the second solo show in New York of the Peruvian artist Alberto Borea, who’s work has been consistent in depicting the poetics of the objects as the primary point of access. For this exhibition, Borea employs the formal qualities of objects such as, Native American pottery, construction tools, immigration cards among others to continue to investigate the materiality of the “residues of civilization,” and by that the changes in society.

His new work raises questions of accountability for the situations of the cities he is surrounded by. Daily examples like: “The train service is delayed because of construction”; “the economy is delayed because of…” point out justifications used to legitimize the fragility of our economic model, and the imminent coming of obsolescence.

The title of the show “Because of Construction” takes the everyday announcement excusing inefficient train service, and creates a metaphor to draw the connection to other problems between mass media and society.

Utilitarian objects are treated like icons by juxtaposing ancient and present civilizations, a way for Borea to analyze economy and identity issues. Borea provides a poetic system of understanding objects that allude to the basic and also spiritual needs of people. In “Here It Comes The Light (A Lanscape of Lima)” and “Destiny” Borea addresses the search for progress by depicting the phases that a civilization passes through in order to survive and the role that chance plays in this development. This exhibition manifests his reflection of the panorama of political an economic climates on a global level, looking into current times as well as back in history.

Alberto Borea, was born in Lima, Perú in 1979. His works has been exhibited in several solo and group shows in Latin America, Europe and the U.S. Most recently he participated in “New York” at The Museum of Americas Washington DC, 2012 / “Salvajes” at Traneudstillingen, Denmark, 2012 / “Remesas: Flujos Simbólicos” at Fundación Telefónica Perú, 2012 / “Dublin Contemporary” –the Dublin Biennial, 2011 / The “S-Files” -El Museo del Barrio Biennial, 2011; among others. He has participated in different programs and artist residencies including Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2008), Art Omi International Artists Residency (2009), The International Studio and Curatorial Program(ISCP). He lives and works between New York and Lima.
