The Hebrew Home at Riverdale is pleased to announce its latest exhibition, Alchemy in Art: Selected Abstract Sculpture by Barry Feuerstein. A reception and artist’s talk will take place on Sunday, October 14, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. on Helen’s Terrace, located off the first floor of the Resnick Pavilion at the Hebrew Home, 5901 Palisade Avenue in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx. The four recently completed sculptures in the exhibition are composed of copper, stone and sapele – a reddish-brown wood similar to mahogany. Three of the works rise 6-12 inches off the ground, and they vary in width, with the narrowest only 12 inches wide, and are from 10-16 feet in length. Titles such as Drifting Continents, Pangaea, String Theory and E=Higgs boson x C^2, reflect the inspiration Feuerstein takes from science and the natural world: particle physics, mathematical principles (such as String Theory, the Golden Section and Fibonacci Symbols) and global warming. He has also addressed these subjects in paintings, photographs and drawings.

Feuerstein writes: “At the time that I received my MFA I was influenced by a number of sculpture/installation artists: Carl Andre, Anthony Caro and Isaac Witkin are some of the main ones. I was seeking to achieve a strong impression on grounding the work in relationship to the earth or to interior space by having the work low in height. My distance from Minimalism was important, such as using irregular shapes, thus departing from industrial concepts and being more attuned to imaginary internal landscapes.”

Feuerstein has an MFA degree in sculpture from City College, City University of New York. He has been in several group exhibitions, including at The Drawing Center, P.S. 1 and the Islip Art Museum. His work is in the permanent collections of The City College Art Collection, New York; The Art Collection of The Hebrew Home at Riverdale; Edwin A. Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita, KS; St. Mary’s College Museum Collection, St. Mary City, MD, and Alexandria Museum of Fine Arts, Alexandria, LA.

As a member of the American Association of Museums, The Hebrew Home at Riverdale is committed to publicly exhibiting its art collection throughout its 19-acre campus, including the Derfner Judaica Museum and a sculpture garden overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades. The Derfner Judaica Museum + The Art Collection provide educational and cultural programming for residents of the Hebrew Home, their families and the general public from throughout New York City, its surrounding suburbs and visitors from elsewhere. The Home is a nonprofit, non-sectarian geriatric organization serving more than 7,000 elderly persons through its resources and community service programs.
