_It is about four animalistic scents Rose-scented saddle of lamb Lily-scented matter Shaken out and rustled On a soft pillow As if running across the heath Claustrophobic yet exact I allow for my body to fall_
Tracy Williams, Ltd. is pleased to present Astrid Svangren’s first show in the United States, in which she transforms the gallery into a surreal and subjective space. The show is comprised of all new work, which Svangren made while living in Manhattan and working in Brooklyn—an experience that helped to inform her practice.
Throughout the gallery space, Svangren drapes delicate and sheer fabrics, allowing them to pool and hang freely. The use of untreated wool roving and feathers introduces a bucolic texture and scent to the usually pristine gallery space. Sculpted fabric and paper layered over painted glass and Plexiglas serves as a quasi-veil that both reveals and conceals the loose strokes of paint below. Svangren’s poem serves as a comprehensive title for the installation, guiding the production of the work and providing another layer, or lens, through which to view it. Like its namesake, almost synesthetic title, the installation conveys a certain feeling, yet remains equivocal, easily shifting.
Astrid Svangren was born in 1972, Gothenberg, Sweden, and lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. She received an MFA from Malmö Art Academy in 1998. Recently, Svangren’s work has been exhibited at Wanås Konst, Knislinge, Sweden (2012); Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm, Sweden (2011); Bohusläns Konsthall, Uddevalla, Sweden (2011); and the Moderna Museet, Malmö, Sweden (2009), among others.
