The Rebecca Hossack Gallery is delighted to invite you to the renowned British artist Rebecca Jewell’s first New York solo exhibition

Please join us for the reception on Wednesday September 12 6.30-8.30pm

This exhibition explores how birds have been used by cultures from all over the world to enhance the beauty and wisdom of humans. For example, in Papua New Guinea, the Highlanders wear the Bird of Paradise feathers to attain the beautiful qualities of the bird. In Jewell’s artistic world, the wearer of Owl Headdress would acquire the wisdom and majesty of the owl.

Jewell has perfected a technique for printing onto feathers and she has made these into new artefacts inspired by the British Museum Pacific collections. She has also worked with wallpaper designer Daniel Heath to create two beautiful wallpapers and she has collaborated with milliner Noel Stewart to design feather tiaras. The show will display prints, wallpaper, artefacts and gilded labels and feathers.

Jewell is an Artist in Residence at the British Museum. She is also visiting Research Fellow in Print at London Metropolitan University. Jewell lived in Papua New Guinea in 1982 and studied anthropology at Cambridge University (1985). She gained a PhD in Natural History Illustration from the Royal College of Art (2004). In 2009 she visited the Solomon Islands for a project run by the British Museum. Her work is held in several National Collections in the UK, including the Natural History Museum, the British Museum, the British Library, the National Trust and the Linnean Society.

Jewell’s artwork has been shortlisted for the 2012 Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize.
