Jen Bekman Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Laura Newman. This will be Newman’s first solo exhibition at the gallery.

In Laura Newman’s new abstract paintings, exuberant pours, stained pools of color, and gestural swooshes interact across austere, almost meditative, white fields. Spatially expansive, her often architecturally sized canvases evoke the stark forms of Modernist abstraction, while her sprawling forms, painted in bright, candy colors that are both playful and assaultive, suggest multivalent narratives. Providing counterpoint to these larger forms, Newman inserts precisely painted black lines that hint at a hidden armature beneath the flowing and billowing colored shapes.
