Stones Bones and Relics brings together a group of works that share a reflective gaze at the past. With a nod to the ancient world and broader questions of human origins; death, the after-world and the passing of time seem to be inadvertent subjects in many works where animal bones, bricks, hominid skulls and stone tools make an appearance.
Several works recall mystic practices of the past and attempts to channel ‘other-worldly’ forces. Other works focus more on the material world and utilize the language of nature as a springboard for further contemplation. Stone, silt, sediment and other artifacts and relics are at the same time physical elements in the world but also presuppose something outside their physicality, pointing to the immaterial, impermanent and invisible.
In Stones Bones and Relics, each artist undertakes his or her own investigation into the questions of art, the past and the natural world, producing results that are often dark, comical and puzzling. Including the works of:
Yevgeniya Baras Rory Baron Ginny Casey Lee Lee Chan Peter Hoffmeister Cooper Holoweski Amanda Lechner Emilie Lemakis Anna Mikhailovskaia Mason Saltarrelli Ellen Schneiderman Matthew Schrader StudioAND Gabriella Szpunt George Terry Brett Day Windham Audra Wolowiec
