Kravets/Wehby Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of New Paintings, an exhibition of new works by James Busby. The show will open on Thursday, September 6 and run through October 11.
In New Paintings—James Busby’s first solo show at Kravets/Wehby Gallery—he expands his palette and uses bright blocks of color to complement and contrast the stark metallic background. Departing from the restricted palette he is known for, Busby builds up off of his delicate manipulations of graphite to create a new and exciting body of work.
Busby’s paintings present an abstracted urban landscape. Absent of figures or language to guide the viewer, Busby instead relies on the use of color and texture to reimagine the cityscape. Busby creates depth by layering and sanding down metallic graphite and gesso beneath the flat, often geometrically stark blocks of colorful acrylic paint. His paintings take on a sculptural form in the way they interact with the light and the position of the viewer.
James Busby was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina and lives and works in Chapin, South Carolina.
