Bruce Campbell’s latest works consider two of the more influential organizing tropes of this past century’s art making, semantics and formalism, and their relation to the theatrical nature of viewing art. The works in The Future Will Solve All Problems approach those issues through concrete, virtual, and implied concepts of space. By conflating linguistic definitions of the term ‘space’ Campbell’s drawing, photography, and sculpture ask the viewer to work though what, if anything, separates actual space from the space of virtual environments or other types of imagined spaces that we know to be real yet may never experience.

The central work of the exhibition, Space Frame Device (Hack Space), is a large-scale sculpture wherein the structure is created using simplistic letter-forms. Intersecting rectangular volumes of painted aluminum tubes create layers of structure and text that can be described most succinctly as an absurd ‘spatial haiku’ that suggests potential actions or descriptive narratives.

Bruce Campbell received his MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. His work has been exhibited regionally at Vox Populi, Arcadia University, and Rebekah Templeton Contemporary Art (all Philadelphia, PA). Further afield his work has been included in exhibitions at the Arlington Museum of Art (TX), the Salt Lake Art Center (UT), The Luminary (St. Louis, MO) and The Tate Modern (London, UK). In 2002 Campbell was awarded the DeGolyer Award from the Dallas Museum of Art and was a resident at Art Farm (NE) in 2005. He is currently a resident artist in the chashama Studio Program in Brooklyn, NY where he lives and works.
