dm contemporary NYC is pleased to present Everywhere Tomorrow, a solo exhibition featuring new paintings by Sarah Hinckley, on view now through November 9th, 2012.
Ethereal and airy, Hinckley’s paintings are abstract expressions with nuanced references to landscape and botanical motifs. The larger paintings in the exhibition are oil on canvas, while the smaller works on paper are watercolors. Tending toward the minimal, with muted colors and smooth surfaces, some of Hinckley’s new paintings reveal a bolder palette, and at times, the surfaces permit brushwork and other painterly accidents, bearing witness to the artist’s process.
Sarah Hinckley lives and works in New York. While inspiration for her paintings comes from her current surroundings – triggered by an encounter with a color, a shape, an impression, an emotion, or a memory – it is her childhood memories of Cape Cod, where she grew up surrounded by expansive sea and sky awash with light, that remain a major source of her inspiration and imbue her paintings with a distinctive quality of light.
All elements past and present come together – not in order, not fully understood, not yet resolved, somewhat remembered – and momentarily, order, resolution, clarity, and balance are achieved. Overall, Hinckley’s paintings, as well as her titles, give us a peek into her world, simply hinting without defining, leaving the viewer to come away with his or her own impressions; the general tone remains one of universal hope.
Sarah Hinckley received her BFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and her MFA from Columbia University in New York City. Hinckley’s works have been exhibited widely throughout the United States, and are in numerous corporate and private collections.
