(Newark, N.J) BroLab Collective, in conjunction with the Newark Arts Council’s annual Open Doors and Studio Tour presents “Stack and Rack,” a site-specific public sculpture to be on view in Military Park in the city’s downtown arts district. The sculpture is a modular series of 16 interchangeable units that can be arranged in a near infinite number of configurations to encourage viewers to interact with their urban surroundings. The project amplifies notions of urban play and social intervention through their iconic sculptural forms which encompass a wide range of bright surface colors. The goal is to draw attention to the mundane via their positioning as spatial markers in their Military Park location and asks viewers to reconsider familiar surroundings with fresh eyes. “Stack and Rack” augments existing gallery and studio spaces by occupying a public locale that is accessible to a wide-range of viewers as a means to democratize the art-viewing experience.

The project is organized by Jeanne Brasile, Director of Seton Hall University’s Walsh Gallery. Brasile has worked with BroLab Collective previously, including their artwork in the exhibition “Letting Go” at last year’s Open Doors and Studio Tour and in the SITE Festival/Arts in Bushwick for the exhibition “Habeas Corpus.” She is particularly interested in their socially conscious practice, which generally is concerned with addressing the needs of the host communities with which they work. Their recent commission, “Piazza Gratissima,” at the Mott Haven Branch of the New York Public Library consisted of renovating a neglected courtyard outside the library to create a public space for programming and relaxation. Local workers were used in the construction of the project. Similarly, their project “Bench Press” drew attention to the need for seating along the Q39 and B57 MTA bus routes running between Queens and Brooklyn.

Among their many distinctions, BroLab is currently being featured in the U.S. Pavilion at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale. “Stack and Rack” brings together a number of partnering institutions including; Seton Hall University, City Without Walls, Gallery Aferro and Index Art Center with the generous support of the Newark Arts Council through an Art Start grant. The Open Doors Artists’ Studios and Available Space Tour is an annual event organized by the Newark Arts Council. The Tour features a number of curated and juried exhibitions highlighting artists from Newark and surrounding areas while showcasing available artists’ space; performance art; a rare look into artists’ studios and a crawl through Newark’s numerous and diverse art galleries.
