This exhibit offers a compelling look at painting from diverse perspectives. All of the artists produce work that is painterly regardless of medium or its direct relationship to actual paint. Paint | Not Paint is intended as a small-scale anecdote to the Whitney Biennial survey of contemporary American art. The theme and works included in this show offer fresh insight into the conceptual basis of painting and the ways in which artists are working to continue to evolve the medium.

Robert Appleton offers an installation and limited edition work revolving around an imaginary Geisha; Rafael Sanchez offers four new paintings using materials as diverse as gold leaf and driveway sealer; Joe Fyfe offers a large painting on thinly finished burlap with felt and collage; Gloria Garfinkel shows maquettes for her “outdoor paintings” which are painted aluminum sculptures up to 21-feet tall; Lee Whittier produces video scapes drawn from nature and projected on Plexiglas; and Jo Wood-Brown offers an installation incorporating painting and sound.

Sanchez’ last show at Participant Gallery was reviewed in The New York Times, while Joe Fyfe’s last show at JG Contemporary was reviewed in Art In America. Lee Whittier’s video scapes were presented at the Joyce Soho and he appeared with Slow Six at Joe’s Pub. A photograph of Robert Appleton was included in a write-up in Art in America for his participation in Michelle Handelman’s “Laughing Lounge” as part of Performa 05. Gloria Garfinkel’s work has been reviewed in ARTnews.
